A Message to Garcia paints a good picture about integrity and how when you are told to do something, you should do it. The message also demonstrates that times have not really changed since 1899, when the letter was written. I appreciate the example Elbert Hubbard uses of how Rowan was supposed to deliver a letter to Spanish general, General Garcia. Rowan is the role model of how a good worker should respond when their boss asks them to do a task for them. I believe everyone should live by the code 'Carry a Message to Garcia.' In today's world, the workplace is a competitive place. If your boss does not see you work and get tasks done, then you will not be chosen for promotions and raises compared to a very hard worker. A hard worker does not slack on the job, he does not talk back to his superiors, and he simply does what he is asked of. Another sign of a good worker and leader is that they take initiative when working on a team.

Elbert Hubbard in my opinion is not a cranky old man who just complains about everything. He has a point and those who realize his message will be successful. Elbert Hubbard says that everyone should be willing to work. If one is to do a slipshod job it is out of laziness or lack of care. If you are a Rowan you will go to the furthest most dangerous places you could think of if you are asked to. What Hubbard wanted to see more Rowan's in the world. Elbert Hubbard is not wrong, he just wants to see the world transform into a better place. Sadly the issue that Rowan wrote about in 1899 is still relevant today. You can fix that yourself today and right now! Once in a while everyone should go through a self check where you analyze how you have been spending your free time and how well you have stayed on top of your work and if you ever have avoided doing certain tasks out of laziness, like Mr. Hubbard describes in his Message to Garcia.

The following are five points which will help me become a Rowan throughout the 2017-18 school year at John Carroll. The first point in my plan is to stay organized. Organization is something necessary in any individual who wants to prevail. Without organization you will lose important papers, forget what assignments you have to do, and the list goes on and on. My plan to stay organized is to keep a folder of papers for each class, and that way I will just need to pull the folder out if the teacher asks for anything. Of course you can still be successful without organization but it will be more difficult. The second point I have in my plan is to stay on top of my school work. Believe it or not, but organization ties into this. Between assignments, projects, and studying for quizzes and tests, it will be difficult, not being organized, and still managing to get everything done. Another huge part of staying on top of school work is laziness, which is not an option. this is what Elbert Hubbard was writing about! I have to be a Rowan if I want to be able to balance all after school activities and school work. School work will always remain priority number one though, no matter what. The third point of five in the plan is to study for tests. Tests are big grades and when you factor in a couple of big test grades that were not the best into a grade that has perfect assignments it will ruin it. Thats why it is important to start reviewing the material that the chapter covered a couple days before the test is given. A good studier will create flash cards, mini quizzes, and other fun ways of re-learning the information in the chapter. A good study habit will be to not be distracted. That includes shutting off cell phones, televisions, and computers unless it is necessary. The second to last point is to work hard. This phrase is loosely thrown around a lot. Saying work hard almost means nothing anymore. If your a hard worker you don't need to be told that you are. A hard worker prioritizes what needs to be done first. Then they will finish their work before going about other activities. I am not sure about most people, but I know that for myself I can not have a good time if something is hanging over my head, like studying for an algebra test. That motivates me to get what needs to be done first before I can go out and about doing something else. The fifth and final point relates to the previous one and it is to not get discouraged. This is a big one because if you do not have the attitude of a winner than you can never be one. A winner won't let one terrible quiz or test grade throw them off track. If I am ever so unfortunate to receive a terrible grade on a test, which happens to everyone, I would analyze what I ddi right, what I did wrong, and what needs to be done better, for future tests and quizzes. A good student, a winner, holds his head up high, does what they are supposed to and has the integrity to do the right thing even when no one else is. I look forward to my freshmen year at the John Carroll school, with Mr. Schick, the rest of my teachers, and all of my friends.

  1. Vlad, I am so glad you are in our class. You persevered during your early "troubles" with setting up your blog, and really made a good impression on your classmates (and me), handling the "pressure" I put on you with humor and grace. Then you follow that up with a terrific essay, and a fantastic, insightful Action Plan. You are off to a sensational start. 100/100. Keep it up!
